Please join us in celebrating the 50th ATPPP Scientific Session

We have planned a special program to celebrate this occasion with Dr. Dominique Scarfone, and our discussant the original chair of the ATPPP Scientific Program Margaret Ann Fitzpatrick-Hanly, PhD, RP, FIPA. They will be discussing how psychoanalysis golden rule: free association, is a crucial tool for the craft of psychotherapy. After the event there will be cake to celebrate.

After tracing back Freud’s psychoanalytic method to biological principles formulated by the so-called “Physicalist School,” I intend to show how the method of free association, far from being outdated, is in fact consistent with modern theory of brain function and with the theory of psychic trauma, while also shedding light on the phenomenon of transference and providing a rationale for psychoanalytic interpretation.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the session participants will be able:

1. To link the Freudian method of free association (and freely hovering attention) to contemporary theories about brain and mind;
2. To formulate a conception of psychoanalytic work consistent with the theory of psychic trauma without abandoning the classic psychoanalytic stance;
3. To formulate a conception of transference and its handling derived from the theory of free association and psychic trauma.
