CBT as delivered by both expert cognitive therapists and in its low intense form are safe and of proven and accepted benefit. This workshop attempts to describe and demonstrate viable CBT techniques for use by professionals who are experienced in working with people with schizophrenia. Such techniques add to the benefits of antipsychotic medication and have even proved useful when medication is refused.
Participants will be able to:
-Form working alliances, decrease clients' self-stigma, and apply CBT for psychosis techniques with people with schizophrenia.
-Employ graded activity scheduling and use CBT to address underlying beliefs about failure and defeatist imagery (negative symptoms); apply techniques such as distraction, rational responses to delusions, and strategies to work with voices/auditory hallucinations (positive symptoms)
-Formulate decisions around application of CBT techniques and clinical focus of therapeutic work including medication compliance.
