Abstract Cognitive therapy for depression has become one of the major models of psychotherapy. This treatment model involves a complex set of conceptual and practical skills, however, which work better or worse with certain types of clinical problems. In this workshop, the cognitive therapy methods that are of optimal utility in working with depression are highlighted. Further, the issues associated with chronic and recurrent depression are presented in a practical manner, so that attendees can develop a set of practical strategies to work with this more complicated patient group.
Where possible, information from research evidence is integrated into the workshop, and best practices are promoted. In other cases, common conventions and good practice is cited. The workshop will include suggestions for practice, exercises and video or role presentation. Case examples will also be utilized to promote audience participation.

Who Should Attend? This workshop is intended as a moderate to advanced workshop. To benefit from the workshop, attendees should have basic training in cognitive or cognitive-behavioral therapy, and experience in the treatment of depression.
Biography Dr. Dobson is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Calgary in Canada, where he has also served in other roles, including Head of Psychology and Director of the Clinical Psychology program. Dr. Dobson’s research has focused on both cognitive models and mechanisms in depression, and the treatment of depression, particularly using cognitive-behavioural therapies. He has participated in several trials of the treatment of acute depression, as well as prevention of depression. A current focus of his work is on the prediction and prevention of relapse in depression. Dr. Dobson’s research has resulted in over 160 published articles and chapters, 9 books, and numerous conference and workshop presentations in many countries. Recent books include Risk Factors in Depression (2008, with David Dozois, Academic Press), Evidence-based Practice of Cognitive-behavior Therapy (2009, with Deborah Dobson, Guilford Press), and the Handbook of Cognitive-behavioral Therapies (3rd Edition) (2010, Guilford Press). He has two recent DVD series, and forthcoming book on Cognitive Therapy with the American Psychological Association.
In addition to his research in depression, he has written about developments in professional psychology and ethics, and has been actively involved in organized psychology in Canada, including a term as President of the Canadian Psychological Association. He is the Past-President of both the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, and the International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy. He is also a principal investigator for the Opening Minds program of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, with a focus on stigma reduction related to mental disorders. Among other awards, he has been given the Canadian Psychological Association’s Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Profession of Psychology.
