Have you studied mindfulness or meditation and want to go deeper? Are you a psychologist, nurse, or educator, or are you in the caring professions and want to facilitate meditation within your vocation?
After having taught mindfulness to over a thousand clinicians through Leading Edge Seminars, Michael Stone has developed this streamlined 60-hour training to help you teach mindfulness practices to different clinical populations in small groups or on a one-on-one basis.
This “how-to” training will offer a language for teaching meditation that is secular and rooted in evidence-based research. It integrates the traditional maps of meditation in the Buddhist and yoga traditions with the insights of Western psychology and neuroscience. Attention will be given to the needs of specific clinical populations, diagnostic categories, and contraindications. In addition, you will receive lots of role-play opportunities, practice teaching, one-on-one feedback, and small group interaction.
The aim is to prepare participants to teach meditation by combining deep personal understanding, a contemporary language for describing what happens in meditation, and the essential skills for facilitation.
Combining in-person training sessions with online peer-based learning, this 60-hour intensive with Michael Stone and guest faculty is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of meditation practice and learn how to guide clients in mindfulness meditation with skill.
This training comprises —
• Two 5-day non-residential courses in Toronto
• Peer-based learning: you will be partnered with other students in the course for feedback and co-study, creating a community learning environment
• Online group video meetings
• Continued support after graduating
To complete the training you will also need to:
• Complete one personal essay, 3 pages in length, due half-way through the program
• Undertake practice teaching assessed by Michael and guest faculty during the in-person intensives
• Maintain a 30-minute (minimum) daily meditation practice
While not a requirement, participants are in addition encouraged to participate in one silent retreat with Michael (annual retreats offered in France, British Columbia, or New York).

Foundations of Practice and Theory
Embody your practice of meditation, learn to stabilize your mind, and cultivate concentration and equanimity.

Understand the psychological and philosophical teachings from Vipassana, Yoga Sutra, and Zen traditions that inform meditative practices and maps of the mind.

Applications, including Therapeutic Applications
Receive coaching on teaching mindfulness to a variety of different populations, both as small groups and one-on-one.
Skill-building in offering meditation for anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance misuse, and other common symptoms
Obtain the tools for starting your own mindfulness program in a variety of settings.
9:00 – 10:00: Meditation and Check-In
10:00 – 12:00: Theory Session and “how to apply”
12:00 – 1:30: Lunch (90 minutes, starting time approximate)
1:30 – 2:30: Teaching Skills, Role Play, and Applications
3:30 – 4:00: Self-care Practice
Upon completion of all parts of the training, you will receive a Certificate of Participation from Leading Edge Seminars. Note: this certificate is not granted by an external awarding body.
**How is this course different from other Mindfulness trainings?
I developed this course after teaching mindfulness to over a thousand clinicians with Leading Edge Seminars. I realized that the practices could be simplified and secularized, but a deeper focus needed to be given to specific populations, diagnostic categories, and contra-indications. With that experience I developed this iteration of the training.
This course is similar to other mindfulness training programs because it offers a language for teaching meditation that is secular and rooted in evidence-based research. It differs from MBSR and similar mindfulness trainings in that we juxtapose Western scientific research and clinical techniques with a thorough study of the ethical and historical maps from which these meditative techniques are derived. We study scientific journals while also looking at Sanskrit texts (in translation) and comparing these approaches with personal, real-world examples.
For example, we may alternate between studying the Buddha’s description of working with strong emotions like anger, with approaches to emotions that are rooted in western psychology. Or we may talk about anxiety from a cognitive science perspective, then learn meditation practices for transforming anxiety, and then juxtapose this with “eastern” theories about the existential dimension of anxiety.
About the Presenter:
Michael Stone, MA, is often described as a cross between a spiritual teacher and a public intellectual. His ability to combine traditional contemplative teachings from his studies in yoga, Zen, and vipassana, with the insights of Western psychology gives him a unique voice for a new generation of students looking to integrate mindfulness with the demands of their busy lives.
