Canadian Institute for Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (CICAPP)
The aim of this clinical 5-session Extension Series is to encourage understanding of autistic processes in children and adolescents by examining materials the children themselves have brought into their therapies: their drawings and their videos. This understanding is from a psychoanalytic point of view, meaning that empathic receptivity to what the child is communicating becomes the central standpoint.
The learning objective is to develop an emotional appreciation of how autistic children may view and understand their world, and the difficulties and anxieties this may involve.
The artwork (and some of the videos brought in) by three young clients will be examined and discussed. The impact of these materials on those who view them will be a focal point. All three young clients whose work will be examined have artistic gifts, and their drawings offer a magnificent window into their worlds.
