Narrative Therapy Certificate: Actively Engage and Leave Empowered to Implement Change

Facilitator: Bonnie Miller, MSW, RSW
presented by SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health Learning Institute

This Training is Suitable for: Those interested in Narrative Therapy as a beginner, or who have taken Narrative workshops, but would like a refresher on how to apply it.

Description: This 5-day certificate program breaks down the theory of Narrative Therapy into skills that can be implemented immediately into your practice. After each session, participants will leave with a clear set of steps to incorporate this therapeutic model into practice. This workshop will utilize interactive conversations, small and large group exercises, live demonstrations, coached practices, and worksheet handouts.

Narrative Summer Camp for Adults: Actively Engage and Leave Empowered to Implement Change

Narrative Therapy conversations guide clinicians and other helpers to provide time-limited, change-focused and collaborative sessions. If you are new to practice, you will be introduced to a stimulating framework for doing inspired work in this field. If you are an experienced clinician, you will be invited to explore and adapt these ideas and practices to fit with what you already do best.

Through interactive conversations, small and large group exercises, live demonstrations, coached practices and worksheet handouts, you will learn to bring the time-limited and skills-based practices of Narrative
Therapy vibrantly into your current work!

You will learn to:
• Make your therapeutic relationships even stronger and more collaborative
• Bring forward people’s values, skills and hopes even in the midst of repetitious complaint and systemic constraints
• Manage multi-person, conflict-prone and mandated sessions in a way that increases alliance and motivation
• Use assessment and closing documentation to support change
• Embed support for change within people’s existing communities and networks
• Re-energize your commitment and engagement with the work you love

This training is suitable for everyone.

About the Facilitator:

Bonnie Miller has been teaching at the Hincks-Dellcrest Center, Gail Appel Institute since 2010, facilitating day-long and year-long training for new and experienced practitioners. In her role as lead instructor for the Advanced Narrative Extern program from 2010-2015, she honed her skills as a supervisor and as a collaborator with students. She is known for her clarity in explaining complex ideas, and her ability to translate these ideas into practicable skills. She constantly modifies her teaching practice, as she responds to training participants, clients and inspired teachers in the field.

She has a busy private practice, where she specializes in working with people influenced by anger, family conflict, depression and anxiety. Bonnie helps people with issues related to grief, loss and serious health concerns, the impact and meaning of growing older, concerns related to couple conflict, parenting and family change. She has worked with youth in the community, with volunteers and staff as a manager and program developer, and with children, youth and adults affected by domestic violence.

Bonnie has been practising in the field since 1990 and has grounded her work in post-structural and narrative therapy practices since 2002. She has presented at conferences across Canada and in the U.S., and values the important intersections between clinical work, reflective practices and the rich opportunities for mutual influence in teaching and training.
