The 2017 Dorothy Hill Memorial Symposium

Penny Corkum, Nezihe Elik, Rhonda Martinussen
presented by The Section on Psychology in Education (SecPE) of the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA)

Moving from "Recommendations" to "Implementation" in the Schools What Psychology Practitioners Can Do

Join us for presentations and panel discussions to address the many issues surrounding implementation of the
recommendations Ontario psychological practitioners make in public and private settings.

MORNING PRESENTATION
Barriers and Facilitators for Evidence-based Interventions in the Classroom: Using Technology to Bridge the
Research to Practice Gap for ASD, LD and ADHD
Presenters: DR. PENNY CORKUM, R. Psych. and DR. NEZIHE ELIK, C. Psych.
Presentation Description:
This presentation will examine barriers and facilitators to the uptake of evidence-based interventions for
student strengths and needs in the classroom. Using Teacher Help as a case study, we will explore the key
factors leading to the successes and challenges in evidence-based program implementation including barriers
related to time, resources, and costs. The Teacher Help program was developed working collaboratively with
educators to understand the needs and barriers of using evidence-based interventions in the classroom.
Teacher Help assists classroom teachers in providing evidence-based interventions to students in grades 1 to
12 with mental health disorders, currently focusing on students with ADHD, ASD and LD. At the end of this
presentation, participants will be able to address barriers and provide facilitation to the uptake of evidencebased practice for educators in the classroom.

AFTERNOON PRESENTATIONS
Working Together: How Psychologists Can Support Teachers’ Engagement in Practice Change to Promote
Well-Being and Learning in Students
Presenters: DR. RHONDA MARTINUSSEN
Presentation Description:
School contexts today are most challenging due to the wide range of issues embedded in the daily lives of
classrooms. Psychological services in schools are ever more important in addressing a multitude of student
and staff needs, with psychological assessment and consultation services in high demand. However,
recommendations from these assessments and consultations are not always sufficiently implemented. This
presentation will focus on methods to assist educators in utilizing recommended practices that are consistent
with evidence-based research outcomes. Specific practical approaches will be identified that can be used to
support collaboration with teachers as well as student engagement. At the end of this presentation,
participants will be able to apply methods to consult, recommend, and promote evidence-based interventions
for educators.

PANEL DISCUSSION:
Creating Effective Engagement and Change Among Practitioners to Benefit Our Students
Our speakers will discuss issues in effective implementation of evidence-based intervention in school settings.
