Dates: May 11, 12 & July 13, 14, 2012 This continuing education workshop provides a practical, skills-based approach to the office-based treatment of patients suffering from a range of effects of psychological trauma. It wil offer an in-depth exploration of issues across a phase-oriented therapy that assumes the attendees have some comfort and experience with the assessment and stabilization of chronic trauma patients. It will include attention to substance abuse issues, the importance of cultural considerations and the neurobiology of trauma. In addition to didactic learning, experiential learning provides live demonstration interviews with simulated patients by faculty and participants, bringing the theoretical material to life and illustrating the applied principles in practice. Pre-requisite: In order to take advantage of this first Level II course, the attendee needs previous attendance at an MSPI Trauma Training Level I course and/or experience in assessment and stabilizing skills for trauma patients.
Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to: describe a rational, practical, and integrative approach to working with dissociation in clients with complex developmental trauma disorders;
employ at least four interventions to help the patient integrate traumatic memories;
delineate inner-directed phobias in trauma and interventions for each phobia;
be vigilant for and have an approach to address substance abuse and misuse;
recognize the importance of cultural competence, sensitivity, and safety in the treatment of patients with unresolved traumatic experiences.
Course Director: Clare Pain, MD, MSc, FRCPC, is an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, Director of the Psychological Trauma Program and Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Co-Project Director of the Toronto Addis Ababa Psychiatry Project (TAAPP) and Coordinator of the Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaboration (TAAAC). Her clinical focus is on the assessment and treatment of patients with psychological trauma, as well as on the trans-cultural aspects of psychological trauma. Dr. Pain has lectured and taught extensively on various aspects of psychological trauma. She has published a number of articles on the subject and, together with Pat Ogden and Kekuni Minton, wrote Trauma and the Body: A Sensorimotor Approach to Psychotherapy (Norton, 2006); and The Impact of Early Life Trauma on Health and Disease: The Hidden Epidemic - with co-authors Ruth Lanius and Eric Vermetten (Cambridge University Press, 2010). Guest Faculty: Ruth Lanius, MD, PhD, graduated from the University of British Columbia with a combined MD and PhD degree in Neuroscience in 1996. She continued her training at the University of Western Ontario where she completed her residency in psychiatry in 2000. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Western Ontario. She established and directed the Traumatic Stress Service and the Traumatic Stress Service Workplace Program; services that specialize in the treatment and research of Posttraumatic Stress diosrder (PTSD) and related comorbid disorders. She currently holds the Harris-Woodman Chair in Mind-Body Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario. Her research interests focus on studying the neural correlates of PTSD using neuroimagins (functional magnetic resonance imaging) and treatment outcome research examining various pharmacological and psychotherapeutic methods. Her research is currently funded by several federal funding agencies. Dr. Lanius is an ad hoc reviewer for numerous journals and granting agencies. She has lectured on the topic of PTSD in North America, Europe, and Japan. Guest Faculty: Kathy Steele, MN, CS, is Clinical Director of Metropolitan Counseling Services, a non-profit, low-cost psychotherapy and training center, and is in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a past President of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation. She frequently teaches about trauma and dissociation around the world, and has authored or co-authored numerous publications in the field. Kathy has received several awards for her work, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation. She is co-author of The Haunted Self: Structural Dissociation of the Personality and Treatment of Chronic Traumatization (2006) and Coping with Trauma-related Dissociation: Skills Training for Patients and Therapists (2011). She is currently writing a clinical manual on treatment of trauma-related phobies with Suzette Boon, PhD and Onno van der Hart, PhD. Fee and Information The cost for this workshop is $745. Lunch is included on both Fridays.
Attendance is expected for all 4 dates. The Fridays are full days and the Saturdays are half-day mornings only.
