The Last Asylum by Barbara Taylor

The Last Asylum by Barbara Taylor

Friern Hospital is the setting for much of Will Self's book Umbrella . It used to be the Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum. During its last five years of existence, and under its final name, Barbara Taylor spent 18 months living there starting in the summer of 1988. The book spans years of sessions with Taylor's analyst, V, which run either side of her time at Friern. Throughout this engaging read one rides, point-of-view styles, through Taylor's experience with anxiety and the depths of its many possible corollaries. Her perspective is one of first hand understanding, compassion for her own past, present, and future (and, in tandem, for the life and times of others). A perspective that can uniquely inform any discussion about the treatment of those that suffer from mental illness. Whether that discussion occurs in private thoughts or on a panel. I read this book when it came out and again, recently, so I could write this review. It is like no other and is very worthy reading.
