This work summarises what is known about attachment disorders from theory, empirical research and clinical experience with children who experienced severe early deprivation. The concept of attachment disorder has grown in recent years, yet there is considerable confusion among professionals about what constitutes an attachment disorder and how to provide palliative care for those children affected. This scientifically-grounded book is the first serious attempt to summarise what is known about these disorders, drawing on theory, empirical research, and experience in child care settings. The book opens with a historical overview of the concept of attachment disorder and goes on to make suggestions about how to assess whether or not children are suffering from such a disorder, and how to intervene in and manage cases once diagnosed.
