Lacey's luxurious life as an "only dog" changes the day Mom and Dad bring home a new baby. While Lacey goes through all of the confusion and upset that any child feels when presented with a new sister or brother, she eventually starts to like having baby Elana around, and even tries to teach her a favorite hobby: barking. But when Elana takes no notice of all the noise, Lacey realizes that Elana can't hear, and she vows to become "Elana's ears"— and the best big sister in the world. With wry commentary, Lacey offers children a refreshingly honest and funny glimpse at parents, new babies, and growing toddlers. For parents, a comprehensive afterword by Jane Annunziata, PsyD, describes children's common responses to new siblings and offers extensive how-to recommendations for making the adjustment as easy as possible. About the Author: Gloria Roth Lowell lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and daughter, Elana, who was diagnosed as hearing impaired at 22 months. Their dog Lacey really did help her "parents" realize that Elana couldn't hear. Ms. Lowell is a teacher and an active member in national and regional organizations that are devoted to the deaf and hard of hearing and to research and education in hearing loss. About the Illustrator: Karen Stormer Brooks is both a graphic artist and an illustrator. Her illustrations have appeared in Highlights, Cricket, and Crayola KIDS magazines, as well as many other publications for children. Elana’s Ears is her third picture book. Ms. Brooks lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband, two children, and a pair of cats, and hopes one day to add a dog to the family as well.
