Motivational Interviewing
price: $158.75 (may be subject to change)
Usually ships in 1 to 2 weeks.

See William R. Miller utilize Motivational Interviewing in an actual counseling session with a client struggling with addiction.

Dr. Miller demonstrates how Motivational Interviewing helps people resolve their ambivalence about changing addictive behaviors. The therapist creates an atmosphere that is conducive to change by expressing empathy and encouragement, rolling with resistance, and helping the client explore the gaps between their current behaviors and the life they would like to lead. In this video, Dr. Miller works with a client who is considering changing his alcohol use and smoking habits. Jon Carlson and Judy Lewis introduce Dr. Miller, and facilitate an in-depth discussion of the further impact and uses of the model.

Reviews:

Dr. Miller raises provocative questions about traditional treatment for addictions and offers an effective, client-centered, empirically supported alternative. He demonstrates how to harness the natural desire for change and how to see “resistance” as an outgrowth of the therapist-client relationship. His method has great relevance, regardless of theoretical orientation or presenting problem.
- Albert Dytch, MFT, Oakland, California

Overall the video was a terrific opportunity to learn about motivational interviewing from MI pioneer William Miller. In addition to interview/didactic portions where he clearly lays out the philosophy and essential components of MI, viewers are treated to a lengthy live session with a volunteer client. I especially appreciated Dr. Miller's explanation and demonstration of how MI has it's roots in Rogerian, client-centered therapy, and that it has its power in drawing out clients (rather than confronting them), focusing on their inner resources, and facilitating clients' expression and awareness of discrepancies between where they want to go and where they are.
- Robert A. Nemerovski, PsyD, San Francisco, California
