Featuring world-renowned experts:
• Bessel A. van der Kolk, M.D. • Peter A. Levine, Ph.D. • Janina Fisher, Ph.D. • Robert Scaer, M.D.
In part two of Trauma Treatment: Psychotherapy for the 21st Century, learn from the world's leading trauma clinicians and researchers a coherent, comprehensive theoretical basis for understanding the physiology and neuroscience that underlie trauma.
This DVD will answer many questions regarding the physiology and neuroscience behind your client’s trauma:
• Why do some techniques result in great outcomes, yet badly trigger others? • Have you observed in session that some clients will seem terrified - breathing quickly, eyes wide, even trembling-then a moment later they seem completely calm? • Why can one client talk about abuse and calmly recall the incident as if it had happened to someone else, while another client can’t speak of it at all? • How is it that the same event can cause PTSD in one person and not another? • What makes a memory “traumatic”? • Why do some clients with abusive childhoods have subsequent trauma but also have “unrelated” health problems?

Objectives:
• List the symptoms of trauma-hyperarousal; affect dysregulation; dissociation, body memories and "flashbacks" • Describe Porges' Polyvagal Theory and its implications for trauma treatment • Explain effective somatic techniques to reduce/eliminate client's body memories, "flashbacks" and dissociation

Robert Scaer, M.D. received his B.A. in Psychology, and his M.D. degree at the University of Rochester. He is Board Certified in Neurology, and has been in practice for 39 years, twenty of those as Medical Director of Rehabilitation Services at the Mapleton Center in Boulder, CO. His primary areas of interest and expertise have been in the fields of brain injury and chronic pain, and more recently in the study of traumatic stress and its role in all mental illness, as well as in physical symptoms and many chronic diseases. He has lectured extensively on these topics, and has published several articles on the whiplash syndrome and other somatic syndromes of traumatic stress. His first book, The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation and Disease, presents a new theory of dissociation and its role in many diseases. A second book, The Trauma Spectrum: Hidden Wounds and Human Healing, released in July, 2005, explores the insidious spectrum of culturally-based trauma that shapes our lives, and how transformation and healing may still take place. He is currently retired from clinical medical practice, and continues to pursue a career in writing and lecturing.
Bessel A. van der Kolk M.D. has been active as a clinician, researcher and teacher in the area of posttraumatic stress and related phenomena since the 1970s. His work integrates developmental, biological, psychodynamic and interpersonal aspects of the impact of trauma and its treatment. His book Psychological Trauma was the first integrative text on the subject, painting the far ranging impact of trauma on the entire person and the range of therapeutic issues which need to be addressed for recovery. Dr. van der Kolk and his various collaborators have published extensively on the impact of trauma on development, such as dissociative problems, borderline personality and self-mutilation, cognitive development in traumatized children and adults, and the psychobiology of trauma. He was co-principal investigator of the DSM IV Field Trials for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. His current research is on how trauma affects memory processes and brain imaging studies of PTSD. Dr. van der Kolk is past President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School, and Medical Director of the Trauma Center at JRI in Brookline, Massachusetts.
