About Caversham Booksellers

Caversham Booksellers is an independent specialised bookshop whose doors opened October 15th, 1989. The founders were Dr. Christine Dunbar (psychiatrist and psychoanalyst) and Peter Heyworth (Professor of English for thirty years at University College, University of Toronto). We specialise in providing books for mental health professionals both through our store and by mail throughout the world.

We offer books for a wide range of specialties including, psychoanalysis, psychiatry, all (or at least all that we know of) forms of psychotherapy, trauma, Jungian analysis, neuroscience and many more. We also sell textbooks for many local schools and training centres.

More than that, though, Caversham is a community of often eccentric but knowledgable staff and interesting, interested and indeed often eccentric customers. Many of our customers we know personally as local authors, or experts in their fields. Some of them visit us two or three times a week, while others are afraid to come to our store because of the dangerous appeal of many of our books. Some of our best customers have never set forth in our store ordering books over the phone instead, making this website a logical extension of our service.

When we first started, we published a very popular annual catalog of all the books that we stocked. This endeavour quickly proved far too time consuming and costly so we had to abandon it after the fifth one, although the last one lived on for a while on our old website. Now, after far too long a break, we offer our catalog again, this time only on the web. Not all of the descriptions have been entered yet, but as this site matures and grows, the gaps will get smaller and smaller. Also, now we can offer information on conferences in and around the city, provide links to schools, organisations and other interesting sites related to the mental sciences and keep you updated on new books and ideas as they happen, all things that would not have been possible with our printed catalog.

So please, browse through our sections and titles - they are are organised roughly how we organise our store. And don't forget to check out the other sections of this site as they are full of other useful information. And check back often because this site is constantly growing and changing.

Thanks! (oh, and if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, feel free to e-mail us at [email protected])
