Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders: Core Components for Adults

This Training is Suitable for: Medical professionals, mental healthcare professionals and students.
Description: In this workshop, participants will learn the principle protocol of CBT for eating disorders, and how to identify and differentiate the clinical presentation of specific diagnoses (e.g., anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder). Core psychopathology will be discussed along with CBT theory. Participants will learn, step-by-step, how to engage clients in self-monitoring, establish regular eating habits, interrupt behavioural eating disorder symptoms, and address maintaining mechanisms.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an empirically-supported treatment for eating disorders. In this workshop, you will learn the principle protocol of CBT for eating disorders. You will learn how to identify and differentiate the clinical presentation of specific eating disorder diagnoses (e.g., anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder). Core psychopathology will be discussed along with cognitive behavioural theory. You will learn, step-by-step, how to engage clients in self-monitoring, establish regular eating habits, interrupt behavioural eating disorder symptoms (e.g., binge eating, induced vomiting, laxative abuse), and address maintaining mechanisms (e.g., over-evaluation of weight and shape).

1. Identify behavioural patterns associated with specific eating disorder diagnoses
2. Conceptualize the core psychopathology of eating disorders
3. Apply, step-by-step, the principle protocol of CBT for eating disorders
4. Troubleshoot common challenges when treating eating disorders

About the Facilitator:

Dr. Jamie C. Farquhar is a registered clinical and health psychologist who specializes in the delivery of evidence-based treatments for eating disorders, body image disturbances, depression and anxiety. He obtained his PhD in Clinical Psychology from Concordia University and completed his clinical training at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the McGill Comprehensive Health Improvement Program, and the Eating Disorders Program of the Douglas Mental Health Institute. He has co-authored research papers on topics of eating disorders, body image, and life regrets.

A former team member of the Eating Disorder Program of the Toronto General Hospital, Dr. Farquhar now operates a private practice in downtown Toronto. He also facilitates skills-based support groups at Sheena's Place Hospice for Eating Disorders. He is a member of the Canadian Psychological Association, the Canadian Association for Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies, the College of Psychologists of Ontario, and the Ontario Psychological Association.
