Getting Grounded

Michel Jones, MSW, RSW
presented by SOS Workshops

Location: The Highland Country Club (1922 Highland Heights) London, Ontario

In direct service work we often work with clients who are stuck or trapped in complicated emotional and social situations, leaving them feeling overwhelmed, helpless and angry or scared. We may not be able to help them turn these difficulties around in the short run. Clients then face having to dig in and struggle through whatever adversity comes their way or sink under the strain. Using recent neurological research and proven stress reduction methods, this workshop will provide practical tools that front-line workers can use to help dysregulated clients ground themselves and regain a sense of self-control and self-efficacy. Whether the client is a first-time user of a service (drop in centre, shelter) or a frequent consumer (severe and persistent mental health, residential program).

About the Speaker:

Michel Jones is a registered psychotherapist in Ontario specializing in the repercussions of psychological trauma in people’s lives. Her clinical background at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health includes work with the elderly, with the indigenous population, and with addictions issues. She has developed and presented workshops throughout Ontario including workshops on grounding and on specific treatment modalities such as cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy and mental health education for government employees who come into contact with troubled individuals. She is currently developing workshops for men with addiction issues (Hero’s Journey) and for non-indigenous front-line workers who work with indigenous clients (Two-eyed Seeing).

Workshop Objectives:

Participants will review tools such as:

- Breath retraining
- Radical Acceptance
- Distraction from Self-Destructive Behaviour
- Self-Soothing Skills
- Containment imagery
- Relaxation techniques
- Visualization protocols

Participants will learn:

How threat reactions can trigger different parts of the brain (the primitive brainstem, the emotional limbic system and the rational pre-frontal cortex
How to help clients recognize when they are using “bottom-up” or “top-down” in reaction to stressful situations
How to use the appropriate tools to keep the client within their “window of tolerance”

This is an experiential workshop – be prepared to work (and have fun!)
