2013 EXTENDED SPECIAL SERIES: Clinical Understanding of Trauma, Using Bion’s Approach

Coordinator: Dr. Rafael Lopez-Corvo
presented by Toronto Psychoanalytic Society

March – December 2013

Pre-conceptual traumas, genetically structured from absences, constitute highly toxic emotional parasites, or beta elements, that inhabit the mind, feed on time and space, inhibit processes of symbolization and reproduce incessantly, thereby determining not only all forms of psychopathology, but also the idiosyncrasy of each individual.

Cost $405

In more detail:

This is predominantly a clinical course using contributions made by Wilfred Bion. I am considering in this course the existence of two different forms of trauma, "pre-conceptuals" and "conceptuals", the former is ubiquitous, the latter accidental. Pre-conceptual traumas represent 'pre-conceptions' that take place during the first years of life, when there is not a mind capable of containing and endowing them with a sensible meaning, different from "conceptual traumas" that occurs at an older age, at a time when there is already a mind capable of containing and providing a meaning, but due to the combination of three main factors, the mind fails to contain the trauma. The three factors are the following: i) the intensity of the 'conceptual trauma' in question, ii) the ego's limited capacity to tolerate frustration, and iii) the characteristic of the 'pre-conceptual trauma'. There is always an 'emotional entanglement' or "deferred action" between conceptual and pre-conceptual traumas; to the point that we could state that often, conceptual traumas are meaningful because of the existence of pre-conceptual traumas.

Pre-conceptual traumas split the mind in two opposite states that continuously interact: "the traumatized and the non-traumatized". The traumatized state is the consequence of traumatic experiences that had taken place during the first years of life, while the non-traumatized state represents the mental development that will normally take place from birth to adulthood. Pre-conceptual traumas are a consequence of the discrepancy present between the natural helplessness of the child and the supremacy of the parents. All existing forms of psychopathology are always traumatic. The traumatized state is always minutely split and continuously projected everywhere together with the part of the mind that contains it.

Continuation of Learning Objectives:

1) Participants will be able to learn about historical misconceptions that hindered proper comprehension of the significant role of “pre-conceptual” traumas in the consolidation of all forms of psychopathology. Pre-conceptual traumas split the mind into a traumatized (psychotic) and a non-traumatized (non-psychotic) part of the personality

2) Participants will also learn about the phenomenology of diachronic transformations of "pre-conceptual traumas" using Bion's notion of container-contained, as well as a model I depicted as "homeomorphic symbolization".

3) Participants will also learn about Bion’s concept such as "alpha function, reversal of alpha function, contact barrier and screen of beta elements, as well as the difference between 'negative' and positive links. Negative links (-H, -L and -K) operate as the only form of communication between different split parts. Split parts always stand for representations of absent elements compulsively repeated. 'Positive links' (+H, +L and +K), are present in the configuration of total objects that constitute the depressive position or the non-psychotic part of the personality.

All Sessions are scheduled from 10:00am – 12:30pm
