Rewiring Your Practice: Essential Clinical Applications of Polyvagal Theory

Deborah Dana, LCSW
presented by Leading Edge Seminars

Multi-Faith Centre/Koffler House

The autonomic nervous system is at the heart of daily living. It powerfully shapes our clients’ experiences of safety and influences their capacity for connection. In response to traumatic experiences, autonomic pathways of connection are replaced with patterns of protection. With the development of Polyvagal Theory, you now have a guide to the neurophysiological processes of mobilization, collapse, and social engagement. By understanding the Polyvagal Theory, you can more reliably help clients reshape their autonomic responses and rewrite the stories that are carried in their autonomic pathways.

In this experiential workshop, Deb Dana teaches her integrated approach to using Polyvagal Theory in therapy. Participants will learn the organizing principles of Polyvagal Theory and work with practices designed to bring the power of Polyvagal Theory directly into clinical work. Working individually and in pairs, you will learn techniques to map autonomic response patterns and skills designed to reshape the nervous system.

You will learn:

• The fundamentals of Polyvagal Theory
• How to create autonomic maps and use them as a guide in treatment
• How to use the Notice and Name skill to track autonomic states and state shifts
• Ways to engage the co-regulating pathways of the Social Engagement System in your therapy sessions
• About autonomic portals of intervention including breath, movement, touch, and sound
• How the guiding questions of Polyvagal-informed therapy influence clinical practice

About the Presenter:

She wrote The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy (Norton, 2018) and co-edited, with Stephen Porges, Clinical Applications of the Polyvagal Theory (Norton, 2018).
