Observation, Understanding and Reflection [OUR]
Elizabeth Tuters and Sally Doulis developed a course while at the HDC, that is now being taught through the TPS Extension program, where we teach the model of the early years as being a critical time for intervention. We have been teaching the Intervention of Infant-Parent Psychotherapy, to a group of mental health professionals for 30 consecutive weeks, for 3 hours each seminar. This past year, (2018/19), we have had a class where half the participants are present in the physical space and the other half are on line – two from the same city in Ontario and two from the same city in Japan. We have all been impressed with how well this class works together, sharing their clinical material.

We focus on the importance of assessment, formulation and developing a treatment plan. We ask the participants to present clinical material of a case where there is a troubled infant/young child (children)-parent relationship. The primary focus is on the emotional relationship between child and parent/s and how it impacts the therapist. The theoretical orientation uses psychoanalytic concepts, attachment theory and the principles learned from Infant Observation. We attempt to understand each infant/young child and family in terms of the interplay between past and present, actuality and fantasy, self and other, internal and external, conscious and unconscious.

Our range of thinking is from classical to contemporary psychoanalytic theory. We focus on the transference/countertransference paradigms. We deal with the essentials of inter-subjectivity and mutual regulation between the family and clinician, and clinician and the members of the Work Group. We understand that the clinician is affected by the observed and the clinician also affects the field of observation.

We look for the strengths and vulnerabilities and how the infant/child and family impact upon one another, and the clinician and the members of the Work Group. We understand each infant/child, mother, father and family in terms of the parents’ backgrounds and the infant’s development and the currently expressed problem in relation to the whole system. We look for the point of entry into the system. We use the Infant-Parent Psychotherapy Intervention that we had developed and published in the Infant Mental Health Journal (2000).

In this Scientific Meeting we will show “the group at work”, and we will present aspects of a case we all learned from together, as we helped the clinician deal with the parents, the infant and the NICU staff. The presenter is an Infant Mental Health Pediatrician in Japan, who will join with the members of the Work Group and the teachers, to present our experience of learning and working together. We will show a film clip to give a brief glimpse of the group at work in our modern connected world.

Aside from presenting the method of teaching and learning this mental health intervention, we also want to demonstrate the effective use of our modern Internet tools, to reach a larger audience of learners. It dispels the myth that with Internet Teaching there is bound to be a split between the “us in the study room” and the “they out there” using their laptops. With mindful attention on the part of the teachers, to keeping an appropriate balance of interactivity between all the participants, a common bond is established for all.

Full-time students in universities and colleges, and mental-health trainees are eligible for a 25% reduction in course fees. Proof of 2019/2020 status needs to be provided. Please contact the tps&i directly to register at a discount. Refunds must be requested in writing two weeks prior to the beginning of a course. A handling fee of $30 will be retained. After these two weeks, fees cannot be returned.
