Techniques (Not Theories) of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy | EXTENSION COURSE EIGHT

Course Coordinator: Janice Halpern | Course Presenters: Janice Halpern and Marcus Michell
presented by tps&i - Toronto Psychoanalytic Society & Institute

Thursday, 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm: February 28, March 7, 14, 28, April 4, 2019 (5 evenings)
Fees: $300

Preregistration is required.

Many training programmes focus on teaching numerous theories of psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Unfortunately, most people find that this is insufficient for practising psychotherapy. In this course you will be introduced to a modern method of practising psychodynamic psychotherapy, that is fresh, lively and exciting, and very consistent with psychoanalytic principles. The method is based on the work of Fred Busch PhD., who developed it for psychoanalysis. It fits psychodynamic psychotherapy very well. We will use both didactic and experiential methods.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the course the participants will be able to:

• Practice a new method of psychodynamic psychotherapy.
• Recognize the value of learning to “follow affect” and use defence interpretations.
• Become familiar with the empirical literature for this new method.
• Differentiate psychodynamic psychotherapy from psychoanalysis.
• Name some of the techniques in psychodynamic psychotherapy.
