The Dynamics and Skills of Supervision: The Parallel Process and the Interactional Model

Lawrence Shulman is a master at teaching management and supervision. He’s been doing it for 40 years and has few equals in helping managers, whether experienced or new, deal with the nitty-gritty, everyday realities of their jobs. This is Dr. Shulman’s 10th supervision workshop for Leading Edge. His evaluations are always among the highest we’ve ever received. There are few workshops on management that are as relevant or as enjoyable and that attract as many return attendees. This workshop can make a real difference in workplace satisfaction.

Dealing with difficult staff, diversity issues, and the ever-present “doing more with less” while squeezed between administration and supervisees, managers face challenges even in the best of times.

The focus of this workshop will be on method: what the supervisor does in interaction with staff. The four phases of work (preliminary, beginning, work, and ending/transitions) will be used to organize the discussion. Essential skills in communication, relationships, and group leadership will be described and illustrated, and participants will be invited to share their own experiences. Issues will include contracting with new staff members or with staff members as a newly promoted supervisor, supervising defensive staff members, staff apathy and resistance to change, the supervisor’s role as teacher, helping staff to develop skills for dealing professionally with other staff, and addressing primary and secondary trauma in staff. A parallel process will be identified in that the way supervisors deal with staff will be viewed as modelling for how staff relate to clients. The idea that more is “caught” than “taught” will be central.

The workshop will also address supervision of Evidenced-Based Practice (e.g., MI, SFP, and CBT) in an integrative rather than prescriptive manner to increase EBP sustainability in the setting.

The workshop will include presentation, discussion, and an opportunity for participants to raise specific examples from their supervision practice to illustrate the theoretical model. Dr. Shulman will lead the workshop as an educational support group for participants. In this way, he will be modelling how supervisors and managers can lead their own supervision groups.

• Clarify the role of the supervisor as well as the specific skills required to perform this function
• Hone your skills for working with the formal and informal staff group
• Analyze the dynamics of the supervision relationship and be able to deal effectively with “problem” staff
• Develop and implement strategies for helping staff (individually and in groups) deal with direct practice issues
• Make use of the “parallel process” in supervision
• Play an effective role in helping the staff group relate to administrators, as well as helping senior staff communicate with the staff group
• Address primary and secondary trauma in staff resulting from difficult work with clients
• Help staff develop an integrated approach to using concepts and strategies drawn from EBP

About the Speaker

Lawrence Shulman, MSW, EdD, is the former dean and professor at the School of Social Work at the University at Buffalo. He has done extensive research on the core helping skills in practice and supervision, and he works widely as a training consultant in the U.S. and Canada. He is the author of the most recent entry on supervision in the Social Work Encyclopedia and the author of Interactional Supervision. His practice textbook, The Skills of Helping Individuals, Families, Groups and Communities, was published in 2016. Dr. Shulman recently received the Council on Social Work Education’s Significant Lifetime Achievement Award.
