Mount Sinai Psychotherapy Institute - Mount Sinai Hospital, Department of Psychiatry
DATES: October 4, 5 & November 29, 30, 2013
(Fridays are 9-5; Saturdays are 9-12:30)
Psychotherapists often face the challenge of helping patients who struggle with conflict or significant life changes that affect their relationships. It is essential to have a clinical repertoire of ways to understand and help patients with commonly encountered problems such as infidelity, reconstituted families and illness in one of the partners.
This workshop will help participants to expand their therapeutic repertoire and adjust their techniques by attending to interactional nuances, values, and couples' psychological readiness to engage in treatment. Grounded in couple and family theories, Integrative Couple Therapy will provide you with a range of conceptualizations and clinical approaches including systems, attachment, psychodynamic, communication, structural and cognitive behavioural theories (von Bertalanffy; Johnson and Usher; Gottman and Watzlawick; Padezky and Datillio; Minuchin).
The format of the workshop will combine interactive didactic teaching with brief simulations of couples in conflict by the faculty and the other participants, along with videotaped therapy sessions to illustrate the clinical application of theories and technical aspects of working with couples.
Participants will be able to examine critically several approaches about the origin of couple conflicts and their treatment.
Participants will be able to identify and discuss the main obstacles couples present for an effective therapy.
Participants will be able to identify counter-transferencial obstacles to therapy, reflecting the values and preconceptions we all have about couple life.
Participants will be able to discuss the application of the principles examined to some specific issues in couple’s pathology.
(All 4 dates to be attended. Lunch will be served on the Fridays.)
