CONFERENCE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Describe new models of interdisciplinary leadership in providing care for older persons with brain disorders.
Assess innovations in integrating medical and psychiatric clinical and educational activities in geriatric populations.
Evaluate future research directions in developing novel interdisciplinary interventions for late-life brain disorders.
The conference will start on Saturday, November 4 at 5:00 p.m. with a keynote address by Dr. David Oslin entitled Models of Integration for Mental Health Services in Primary Care Settings.

Dr. Oslin is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Oslin is also the Director of the Veterans Integrated Service Network 4 Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (VISN 4 MIRECC) and the Chief of Behavioral Health at the VAMC in Philadelphia. The MIRECC supports research on implementing measurement-based care and facilitates a number of research projects for post-doctoral fellows and faculty. Dr. Oslin also serves as the Executive Site Director of the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania and is the author of over 190 research publications and 30 chapters, books or editorials.

Dr. Oslin’s research portfolio includes studies aimed to improve access to behavioural health care, implementing measurement-based mental health care, and the study of pharmacogenetics of addiction and depression treatment. Additionally, Dr. Oslin continues to research the implementation and dissemination of evidence-based practices for integrating primary and mental health care.

Please join us after the keynote address for a cocktail reception and gala dinner at the Toronto Board of Trade.

The conference will continue on Sunday morning with a plenary presentation by Dr. Lesley Wiesenfeld entitled Enhancing Geriatric Psychiatry Care in the General Hospital: Safety, Stigma, Solutions and Spread. Dr. Wiesenfeld is the Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital and a Geriatric Psychiatrist and Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. She is also the Associate Program Director of the Department of Psychiatry Residency Program. She is the lead physician for Sinai Health System's “Safe Patients/Safe Staff” strategy, an award-winning approach to responding innovatively and proactively to the needs of elderly patients with complex medical and psychogeriatric challenges, particularly delirium, dementia and severe and persisting mental illness.

Dr. Christopher Bowie will give a plenary presentation on Sunday afternoon entitled Enhancing Cognition in Severe Mental Disorders. Dr. Bowie is a Professor and the Director of Clinical Training for the Department of Psychology as well as a member of the Department of Psychiatry and Centre for Neuroscience Studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He is the Head Consulting Psychologist for the Head’s Up Early Psychosis Intervention Program in Kingston and a Clinician Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto.

The conference will focus on shared leadership across several academic activities in geriatric psychiatry. Topics will range from prevention to complex management of chronic patients with severe mental illness, and from collaborative care to promote healthy aging to Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) for severely ill patients in tertiary care centres. We will also hear about state-of-the-art developments in education in geriatrics psychiatry and competency-based approaches to training. In addition, we will learn about the latest in neuroscience and geriatric psychiatry: topics will include advances in the assessment of neuroplasticity in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, neuroimaging in late-life schizophrenia, and current advances in understanding the biological underpinning of behavioural symptoms in dementia.
