All Ears: Psychoanalysis and the Rhetoric of Listening

Presenter: Chris Vanderwees, PhD, RP
presented by tps&i

Wednesday, September 20, 2023: 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm (no break)
TPS Scientific Meeting: Open to All (*Fee may apply. See below.)

** DISTANCE PARTICIPATION ONLY – Registration deadline is one week prior to the meeting.
Preregistration is required.

This discussion will explore what Chris Vanderwees, PhD, RP refers to as Freud’s “listening rhetoric”, in order to think more about how we approach our listening practice in clinical settings. Freud models a pivotal “close listening” practice (echoing the new-critical “close reading” strategies) around attending to nuances of patients’ utterances. Against the grain of Freud’s method, many contemporary approaches to psychology advocate for what some scholars characterize as the positive role of empathy and affect in clinical counselling. Vanderwees assesses various psychotherapeutic schools of thought in terms of how each conceptualizes its own “listening filter.”

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:

• Identify different “listening filters” and how these styles of listening might govern one’s approach to psychoanalytic treatment.
• Have greater awareness of the historical development of listening (free-floating attention) as a technique and the ways this technique has been conceptualized in several psychotherapeutic schools of thought.
• Reconsider the role of listening in relation to transference and countertransference.
