COURSE EIGHT – Listening for the Erotic

Course Coordinator: Elizabeth Tuters Seminar Leaders: Lindsay Barton, Sam Semper
presented by tps&i

Thursday, 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm: May 13, 20, 27, June 3, 10, 2021 (5 evenings)
Fees: $300

Registration Deadline: May 3, 2021
Preregistration is required.

** DISTANCE PARTICIPATION ONLY – This course will be conducted online.

In this 5-week seminar, we will work to deepen our understanding of our patients’ erotic lives and communications (erotic dreams/ transferences) by closely examining our own practice of analytic listening. What are we listening for? How is this affected by our clinical orientation and training?

We will review the literature on analytic listening with particular focus on the role of ‘the erotic’ from drive theory to object relations to contemporary models that decenter essentialist notions of the subject and heterosexual desire.

Using clinical case material, we will work to better understand the ways that the ‘erotic’ may be defended against or enacted, and help clinicians to be in touch with their own responses to this material in order to make safe and productive use of their counter-transferential reactions.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the course:

Participants will be introduced to the history of psychoanalytic models of listening and become familiar with current debates in the field.
Participants will better understand the ways in which the ‘erotic’ or erotic material may be defended against or enacted in their own practice of analytic listening.
Participants will learn how to make productive use of countertransferential reactions to erotic(ized) material.
