Intimacy and personal connection are especially more important during changing times because changing times seem to throw us off balance. Whether turning to the wisdom of ancient prophets or the science of modern meteorologists, we want to know what the future will bring and how to stay safe. During changing times, our health, prosperity, and even political and social structures shift. So, it’s no surprise that anxiety, depression, substance use, and domestic violence are on the rise.

How can we help our clients (and ourselves) cope during these rapidly changing times? One way is through establishing intimacy and safe, interpersonal connection.

As humans, we’re a social species who have been huddling together for support for millennia. Yet other forces get in the way. Our hunger for individual success, status and achievement of all sorts can make it hard to connect. It becomes challenging to open to our shared vulnerability and find refuge and intimacy in our common humanity.

In this interactive virtual workshop, you’ll learn practical tools to help you and your clients find meaning, comfort, and equanimity during these changing times. We’ll explore how to let go of preoccupations with social comparisons and build intimacy to connect more deeply with others. We’ll delve into how to feel good about ourselves and avoid letting vulnerability get in the way of authentic relationships. We’ll also use mindfulness and compassion practices along with proven relational techniques to find comfort, grow and prosper during trying times.

About the Presenters:

Terry Real is an internationally recognized family therapist, speaker, and author. Terry founded the Relational Life Institute (RLI), offering workshops for couples, individuals, and parents across the United States. He also offers a professional training program for clinicians wanting to learn his RLT (Relational Life Therapy) methodology. These changing times have made Terry’s RLT even more meaningful, as many of us seek to build connections and intimacy in this shifting reality.

Terry Real has been a family therapist and teacher for more than 25 years. He is the best-selling author of I Don’t Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression, the straight-talking How Can I Get Through to You? Reconnecting Men and Women,

and most recently The New Rules of Marriage: What You Need to Make Love Work. Terry knows how to lead couples on a step-by-step journey to greater intimacy and greater personal fulfilment.

As senior faculty member of the Family Institute of Cambridge in Massachusetts and a retired Clinical Fellow of the Meadows Institute in Arizona, Terry has worked with thousands of individuals, couples, and fellow therapists. Through his books, the Institute, and workshops around the country, he helps people create the connection and intimacy they desire in their relationships. Terry’s work takes on a rigorous, common-sense approach and is highly relevant for cultivating human connections during today’s changing times. His insights have been shared on Good Morning America, The Today Show, 20/20, Oprah and in The New York Times.

Terry Real is joined by Dr. Ron Siegel for what promises to be an enlightening exploration of intimacy. As a part-time assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School for over 35 years, Ron is also a student of mindfulness meditation. He serves on the Board of Directors and faculty of the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy. He also teaches internationally about mind-body medicine and the application of mindfulness and compassion practices in psychotherapy and other fields. Ron’s insights will add a fresh perspective to Terry’s discussion on ways to build intimacy in a rapidly shifting reality.

Dr. Siegel has edited and written several books, including the critically acclaimed professional text Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, 2nd Edition. He also authored The Mindfulness Solution: Everyday Practices for Everyday Problems, Sitting Together: Essential Skills for Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy and Wisdom and Compassion in Psychotherapy. Ron’s step-by-step self-treatment guide, Back Sense, integrates mindfulness, aggressive rehabilitation, and mind-body approaches to treat chronic back and neck pain.

Dr. Siegel has also created courses. These include The Science of Mindfulness: A Research-Based Path to Well-Being produced by The Great Courses and Healing Through Mindfulness: Effective Practices for Chronic Health Conditions produced by Sounds True.
