Emotional Communication and Attunement in Couples Therapy: How the Therapist Can Lead the Way

Judith Siegel, PhD, LCSW
presented by Leading Edge Seminars, Inc

Friday, October 11, 2013
9:00 am to 4:30 pm
YWCA Elm Centre, 87 Elm Street, Toronto

This workshop will explore the therapist’s use of self in couples therapy through the concepts of emotional attunement and counter-transference. Best-selling author Judith Siegel will apply neurobiology research through the lens of relational and object relations theories to help you process emotional communication and your own responses. Emotional attunement can help you identify and clarify the themes at the heart of the couple’s problems.

Dr. Siegel will help you appreciate the depth and range of different kinds of information generated from the left versus right brain through “tuning in” to the client. You will learn a new way to interpret emotional exchanges and your own responses that goes beyond merely focusing on nonverbal relations. Through the object relations concepts of counter-transference and trial identification, you will learn to explore subtle ways of “knowing” your clients and new forms of understanding.

In addition, Dr. Siegel will examine the process of emotional sharing, how to use the material generated from your own emotional response, how to bring the insight you gain into the therapy session, ways to increase attunement between partners, and how to cultivate emotional self-care so that you have the resources available for attunement without burning out.

You will learn —

How to recognize the signals and power of emotional communication in therapy
To understand counter-transference responses as a form of projective identification that reveals important aspects of the couple relationship
How to use your own emotional responses to gain insight into your clients’ problems
About the process of emotional sharing and ways of bringing this material into the treatment session
How to stay emotionally grounded in order to cleanse
