Extension COURSE SIX - Emotional Muscle: Strong Parents Strong Children

Course Coordinator and Leader: Barbara Burrows
presented by tps&i

Saturdays, 10:00 am – 11:30 am: January 22, 29, February 5,12,19, 26, 2022. (6 sessions)
Fee: $270 per family or individual
Deadline for registration is January 15, 2022
Preregistration is required.

** DISTANCE PARTICIPATION ONLY – However, if possible, this course will take place at the TPS office.

This 6-session applied psychoanalytic course is based on the work of Jack and Kerrie Novick, psychoanalysts from Ann Arbor, Michigan, who have more than 80 years of psychoanalytic experience between them. In their book Emotional Muscle – Strong Parents Strong Children they say:

“Some children turn out to be especially pleasant to be around, other children want to be friends with them, their parents were people we respected and enjoyed. Similarly, in our practice and consultations, parents we worked with became more thoughtful and brave, more open and relaxed, happier and prouder of their children.”

Think with parents, clinicians, and Early Childhood Educators about helping children from 0 to 5 years develop resiliency and confidence. The course explores how psychoanalytic principles can help children become kind, joyful, confident, productive, and creative members of the community. It will outline the developmental tasks in each age category and discuss how adults can help children master these tasks.

The leader will lead the discussion of the assigned readings and participants will be encouraged to share their child-rearing/teaching challenges.

Learning Objectives:

What you might hope to get from this course:

• A greater understanding of how unconscious conflicts in adults (parents or teachers) can impact children’s capacity for impulse control.
• A greater understanding of the specific characteristics and developmental challenges of each age group from birth to five years.
• How to help children master the development tasks at each level to allow for healthy psychological development.
