This rich, dynamic course introduces the field of nutrition for mental health and nutritional psychology.

You will learn the basics of how to enhance your own endurance and focus using nutritional and culinary methods through self-care. And you will learn how to introduce these methods to your clients to improve their self-care and provide the missing link to better mental health today.

We will also cover the concept, ‘nutrition is biology, not ideology’ (Korn 2022), that deconstructs popular myths and fads that impede nutritional health literacy.

This short course outlines the clinical art and science of nutrition for non-nutritionists and briefly explores the importance of nutrition for brain and mind/body function. It also examines how to collaborate with professionals to treat trauma and PTSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, ADHD, emphasizing non-pharma methods.

After completing this 3-hour introduction course on nutrition and mental health, you will be eligible to participate in a more extensive certification in this field.

About the Presenter:

Leslie Korn, PhD, MPH, is a seasoned Integrative Medicine clinician, scientist, educator, and author with over four decades of experience in her field. Her transformative journey began amidst the lush jungles of Mexico, where she embarked on her training over 45 years ago. Later, she honed her skills and expertise in the equally challenging jungle of Harvard Medical School.

As a licensed psychotherapist and certified Functional Nutritionist, Leslie’s passion lies at the intersection of trauma, cognition, and chronic physical illness. With a flourishing clinical practice of over 40 years, she empowers her clients to enhance their mental health and reduce reliance on medications by utilizing natural medicines. Her unique approach also involves mentoring aspiring clinicians, nurturing a new generation of professionals dedicated to this essential field. She also provides invaluable supervision to seasoned clinicians.

Leslie holds a remarkable educational background, including a PhD in Behavioral Medicine from the Union Institute and University, an MPH from Harvard School of Public Health, with a focus on nutrition, and an MA in cross-cultural health psychology from Lesley University. Her commitment to advancing mental health therapies led her to complete a Clinical Fellowship at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry, where she pioneered the use of somatic therapies for mental health, ultimately earning a clinical supervisor role.

Throughout her illustrious career, Leslie has explored diverse areas of expertise. As a Fulbright research scholar in Traditional Medicine of Mexico and an NIH-funded scientist in Mind-Body Medicine, she delved into the healing potential of traditional practices. She has also been a core faculty member at prestigious institutions like The New England School of Acupuncture, The National College of Naturopathic Medicine, the California Institute of Integral Studies, and Capella University.

Moreover, Leslie’s compassion extends to the realm of social justice, where she serves as the director of research at the Center for World Indigenous Studies, a non-profit organization focusing on indigenous community consultation and revitalization through traditional medicine, herbal remedies, and culinary practices.

Among her numerous accomplishments, Leslie is the accomplished author of nine books , including “Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health: A Complete Guide to the Food-Mood Connection,” “Rhythms of Recovery: Trauma, Nature, and the Body,” the bilingual “Medicinal Plants of the Jungle,” “The Good Mood Kitchen,” and “Natural Woman.”

Beyond her professional pursuits, Leslie’s life is enriched by her love for physical activity as a former competitive athlete. She also cherishes her time as a practicing herbalist and delights in culinary creations. With her canine companions by her side, she finds joy in her clinical practice, where she continues to make a significant impact in the world of Integrative Medicine.
