Schemas are not just beliefs, but entire experiences. Schema is a term used in many different ways in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and rarely translates to clear, crisp interventions. Schemas are a useful approach to managing difficult emotions in cognitive behavioural practice.
This training will start with a history and overview of understanding the concept of schemas across cognitive behavioural therapies. From this viewpoint, we will review why and when to do schema work and when it is unnecessary. Appropriate references to literature and case examples will be made. We will discuss both generic/transdiagnostic and specific approaches to schema formulation. The latter requires specific schema models across different mental health conditions and personality disorders. This includes how and when to use schema-focused approaches. Through this approach, participants will be presented with a useable map to understand schemas and enhance effectiveness and the therapeutic alliance in clinical practice.
This intermediate-level training is for mental health and medical professionals working with clients aged 12 to adulthood. Date: September 19, 2023

CE: 6 hours About the Facilitator: Sanjay Rao, MBBS, MD, FRCPsych, FRCPC, MBA is an accomplished psychiatrist who serves as an associate professor at the University of Ottawa, additional professor at Dalhousie University, and the Director at CMAP Health and Unified CBT Academy.
With a rich psychiatry background spanning India, UK and Canada, Dr. Rao has received numerous recognitions, including a 2007 honour at the UK Prime Minister's reception and a 2018 fellowship from the Canadian Association of Cognitive Behavioural Therapies.
As an advisor to the Ontario government, he shaped the implementation of evidence-based psychological treatments, leading province-wide CBT training in Nova Scotia. His research team, focused on publishing systematic mental health care reviews, supplements his extensive workshop delivery and supervision in cognitive behavioural therapies.
