Eline Snel’s Sitting Still Like a Frog: Mindfulness Exercises for Kids and Their Parents created a sensation when it was published and became the basis for mindfulness trainings used in primary and secondary schools, mental health organisations, revalidation centres and in private practice throughout the world. This introductory session will teach the basics of the Eline Snel method which is modelled after Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction training for adults. Eline’s scientifically researched program is designed specifically for children and teens aged between 5 and 18. Pilot studies indicate that the program has helped children improve their sense of well-being, capacity for learning and access to executive functions while also helping them better manage mood swings and fear of failure. This training is aimed at both clinicians working directly with parents and children as well as teachers, parents and caregivers. You will learn how to help children calm their attention, stabilize, focus and shift. By practising how to acknowledge troublesome, uncomfortable or distressing thoughts and feelings without burying them or pushing them away, children can learn how to observe their inner world without immediately judging or reacting to it so that they can respond to events and experiences in the present moment. Children learn how to be mindful by paying attention to the breath, playing memory games, drawing, doing yoga, and other activities.
