TPS 16th Annual Day in Psychoanalysis - In the Clinic

Dr. Elisabeth Young-Bruehl
presented by Toronto Psychoanalytic Society

George Ignatieff Theatre, Trinity College, University of Toronto, 15 Devonshire Place (one block east of St. George, south of Bloor), 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Elisabeth Young-Bruehl, known to many of us as the biographer of Anna Freud, and as a recent speaker on the topic of sacrificial daughters, comes to share with us her current project, her thinking on a type of dream she has observed recurrently in her patients. She has identified the “developmental dream” as an important aspect of clinical treatment. She notes typical features and will present four examples of her sensitive and astute work with her patients and their dreams. Then she will offer some reflections on the “developmental dream” in relation to psychoanalytic theory.

Elisabeth Young-Bruehl, PhD, has taught at Wesleyan University and Haverford College, and this year at Yale University will offer lectures on the history of psychoanalysis. She is now a practising psychoanalyst in New York City and a faculty member of the Columbia Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. For her work on the Anna Freud biography, Dr.Young-Bruehl received a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation and was named Freud Fellow 1986–87 by the Freud Museum, Hampstead, England. She is author of the prize-winning biography of Hannah Arendt.

To register for the Annual Day in Psychoanalysis, simply complete the registration form . For further information about this year’s program, write to [email protected] Established in 1990, the Annual Day in Psychoanalysis has become an important event in the education calendar of Toronto's community of mental health professionals. With the growing interest not only in clinical psychoanalysis, but in the wider application of psychoanalytic ideas to philosophy, history, and language, the Annual Day in Psychoanalysis seeks to reach a broad clinical and academic audience interested in the full spectrum of psychoanalytic thought.
