The Joy of Gender: Counselling Transgender Clients and Their Families

Hershel Russell, MEd
presented by Leading Edge Seminars, Inc

Monday, May 27, 2013, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm • YWCA Elm Centre, 87 Elm Street, Toronto

This workshop will prepare mental health professionals, educators, and other caregivers to embrace work with trans communities. Hershel Russell will present transgender experience as an ordinary, if unusual, aspect of human diversity rather than a medical diagnosis. Training is often not offered in this area and many professionals feel unsure about how to provide respectful, appropriate services. This workshop will provide a solid foundation to enable clinicians and educators to approach this work with confidence.

Hershel Russell is known as a passionate, knowledgeable, and often humourous presenter who believes that effective learning is always active, that respecting everyone’s dignity is key, and that shared, well-timed laughter can accomplish much. The workshop will include a wide range of learning modalities: concise, illustrated lecturettes, thought-provoking experiential exercises, structured discussions, case studies, and carefully selected video clips. He will create an environment in which participants feel at ease and sufficiently comfortable to raise difficult or embarrassing questions, and to discuss them with complexity.

As gender variant children, teens, and adults emerge from invisibility in ever-increasing numbers, Hershel says, “It’s time you got to know about us! We’re fabulous!”

You will learn about —

The historical, cross-cultural, and biological contexts of trans lives
A more complex understanding of gender — what it is and how it works
Current research, international Standards of Care, and emerging “best” and “promising” practices
The diversity of contemporary trans communities and preferred language usage
The lived experience of “transition”, in adults, teens, and children
Effective roles for care providers that are welcomed by trans communities
