Through The Eye of a Needle: Impasses In Treatment (Extension Course One)

Impasses are critical occurrences in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. The management of impasses can determine whether the therapy continues or falters. This course will review the literature on impasses with a view to providing a look at the resources in the literature that have a potential to help the clinician. The material has been organized into four sections: the definition of impasse; transferences that are commonly associated with the occurrence of impasses; countertransference responses to impasses; and, suggested remedies in the occurrence of an impasse. Each section will occupy one evening. Opportunities will be provided for the discussion of clinical cases.

Learning Objectives:

Discover the nature of treatment impasses.
Explore transference and counter-transference perspectives on impasses.
Catalogue the recommended solutions for impasses.
Look for the theoretical implications of impasses for psychoanalytic theory.

Dr. Michel Silberfeld

Michel Silberfeld, MD, FRCP, is a psychoanalyst in private practice. He has been a former two-term President of the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society. He has been teaching about impasses at the Advanced Training Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy; Faculty, tps&i.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits for psychiatrists, as accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and for family physicians from the College of Family Physicians, are available. As per the Royal College standard, each presentation provides a minimum of 25% interactive learning.
Full-time students in universities and colleges, and mental-health trainees are eligible for a 25% reduction in course fees. Proof of 2013/2014 status needs to be provided. Please contact the tps&i directly to register at a discount.

Refunds must be requested in writing two weeks prior to the beginning of a course. A handling fee of $30 will be retained. After these two weeks, fees cannot be returned.
