Trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy: Blending theory with innovative techniques

Liana Lowenstein, MSW, RSW, CPT-S
presented by SickKids CCMH Learning Institute

Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an empirically supported psychotherapy model for treating traumatized children and adolescents. The effectiveness of this approach is enhanced by integrating creative, developmentally appropriate interventions so that children will engage in treatment.

This two-day training will provide an overview of TF-CBT and will present creative interventions for the 8 components of TF-CBT: psychoeducation, relaxation, affective modulation, cognitive processing, trauma narrative, in vivo mastery, conjoint child-parent sessions, and enhancing safety. Therapeutic games, art, stories, and other innovative activities will be presented for use with traumatized children aged 4-16.

Through case examples, activity demonstrations, experiential exercises, and videos of actual client sessions, this training will combine theoretical material with hands-on therapeutic interventions. Participants will come away with a solid understanding of TF-CBT, and many new and innovative techniques for treating traumatized children and adolescents.

Learning objectives:

• The theoretical framework of TF-CBT
• Creative interventions for each of the eight treatment components of TF-CBT
• Strategies for engaging children and parents in treatment
• How to utilize TF-CBT to treat a range of childhood traumas including sexual
• Abuse, domestic violence, traumatic grief, car accidents, natural disasters

Participants of this webinar will have an option to purchase a copy of Liana Lowenstein’s book, Cory Helps Kids Cope with Sexual Abuse: Playful Activities for Traumatized Children for a discounted price. The book will be delivered to their work/home! Additional shipping fees may apply for international participants (outside Canada and the US).
