What's in a Game?

Dale Andersen-Giberson MSW, RSW
presented by Narrative Therapy Centre

10:30 AM to 2:30 PM Eastern Time | Convert to your time zone here

• How do we, as helping professionals, support the people we work with as they interact with technology?
• What does it look like to support people who have relationships with video games and social media in ethical and honouring ways?
• Is there room to help people consider their relationship with technology without falling into the traps of pathologizing or reproducing the oppressions that they face in their lives?

Throughout this online workshop, Dale will facilitate learning that works to explore the aforementioned questions. Participants will have an opportunity to engage with Narrative Therapy approaches and take away ideas to employ in their therapeutic practices. Furthermore, conventional notions of ‘addictions’ will be unpacked and dismantled through a post-structuralist framework.

Participants can expect to:

– Learn about using Narrative Therapy ‘Statement of Position Maps’ (SOPM) to assist people to explore their own position that they have with gaming and social media.

– Explore ways to help young people strengthen resistance to oppression through gaming and social media.

– Explore the use of aliases in games that helps people explore different identities (in particular, gender identities).

– Consider the multiple ways that online communities can be storied in therapeutic conversations.

The workshop will use the Zoom platform and make participation and engagement possible through chat and breakout rooms.
