tps&i Scientific Meeting - Psychoanalysis at the Transgender Edge

Presenter: Sam Semper, PhD, LP, FIPA Discussant: Chris Olive, MD, FRCP (Psych)
presented by tps&i

Wednesday, May 12, 2021: 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm (No break)

TPS Scientific Meeting: Open to all.

** DISTANCE PARTICIPATION ONLY - This Scientific Meeting is available via Zoom meeting only. Preregistration is required. Please RSVP via email at [email protected] Please note that registration closes 48 hours prior to the meeting date.

The history of the clinical encounter between psychoanalysis and transgender individuals is a difficult one. While acknowledging the deeply problematic legacy, many contemporary psychoanalytic clinicians and thinkers argue that psychoanalysis offers unparalleled tools for understanding the complexity and singularity of subjectivity, including trans subjectivity, when transphobic/ normative models of interpretation are recognized and dismantled.

This clinical presentation explores how the experiences, embodiments, and identities of transgender analysands might offer a productive challenge to entrenched ideas within contemporary Freudian psychoanalytic theory and practice. How might these analysands throw into relief the radical aspects of Freud's revolutionary, complex, queer, notion of sexuality and point the way toward a non-normative approach to psychoanalytic treatment when the analyst works at what Hansbury terms the "transgender edge"?

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this presentation:

Participants will become familiar with current psychoanalytic literature related to transgender individuals.
Participants will gain an understanding of specific clinical issues related to working with trans individuals.
Participants will gain an understanding of a non-normative approach to psychoanalytic treatment.
