A note from managing director Joe Adelaars Caversham Booksellers was established in 1989 by Dr. Christine Dunbar (psychiatrist and psychoanalyst born in Caversham, NZ) and Peter Heyworth (1931-2007; professor of English & former Vice Principal of University College). Caversham opening meant Toronto joined New York and London in being home to bookshops specialising in psychology & mental health. My postmusic-degree experience at the U of Toronto Medical Bookstore got me on board as manager. I became a partner in 1994, and in 2007 sole proprietor, when Dr. Dunbar went on to form Caversham Productions with Elisabeth Young-Bruehl. Whether you are in touch by phone or email, or are visiting us in-store or at conferences, you'll be served by a most experienced and helpful group. We miss Eric Evans and Vicki Fraser, who've both taken their psychotherapy practices to full-time. We've three senior staff, hired between 1999 & 2001: Janet Milligan, who has bravely and handily taken on Eric's accounting role; Karl Bustamante, buyer, and creator or our website, databases and gadgets, and "Newsletter Neil" Hendry, anchoring the front of house. Samantha, now our promotions and marketing coordinator, & Noah bring you the rest of our energy and expertise. Our annual catalogue has become bi-annual, modeled on Vicki's efforts, by Karl, me & designer Marcus Sampaio.

The Legacy of Parentbooks |
When Caversham opened on Harbord Street in 1989, Parentbooks had been down the road three years already at 201 Harbord. In January, 2021, 35 years on, they'd taken the decision to retire. We'd happily co-existed, and our selection of Special Needs, Parenting, Pregnancy, Birth & Postpartum, and Education didn't need developing so much — but without them, and with their blessing, we've taken on nearly all of their distributed publishers, and are welcoming a great many new customers to our shop. Though we've done much to re-arrange and align things, please do tell us if you don't see something, or have recommendations! We're so very humbled by the incredible work that Patti, Bill, Maureen, and Leslie had done to build such an unparalleled and iconic independent bookshop. | |
