Where id Was : Challenging Normalization in Psychoanalysis

Molino, Anthony, and Christine Ware, eds.

December 2001
ISBN: 0819564818

A volume in the series Disseminations: Psychoanalysis in Contexts
There have been many "returns to Freud," many attempts to recover the first psychoanalyst's radical challenge to the dominant culture of the day. At no time has it been more important than now -- when the values of "normalization" pervade not only society but increasingly the consulting room itself -- to break through the atrophies of Freudian theory to recapture its early spirit. Many psychoanalysts are doing just that, in an attempt to focus attention on the inherently political dimensions of psychoanalytic...

Leading psychotherapist offers compelling insights into the vital force of ecstasy.
In this provocative and insightful new book, psychologist Michael Eigen presents a phenomenology of ecstatic states. Ecstasy is a force to be reckoned with -- sometimes creative, sometimes destructive. Eigen argues that there is an ecstasy that comes through the ever-necessary confrontation of our psychic cores with suffering and degradation, and he shows that when we can learn to be present with these feelings, they add to the...

A volume in the series Disseminations: Psychoanalysis in Contexts
Provides a complex account of a human emotion.
Rage permeates every aspect of our lives. In this thoughtful series of case studies, Michael Eigen shows the ways in which rage is integral to human existence. Along the way, he explores the role of rage in art, religion and contemporary culture; his far-reaching examples range from "the murderous art" of Shakespeare to road rage to the wrath of God in the Old Testament to a consideration of the events of September 11, 2001. Eigen writes that "rage more than most...

The Parental Image: Its Injury and Reconstruction

Harding, M. Esther, M.D.

June 2003

Some things never change; and the effect of the parental image in the life of each individual has ever been the basis upon which we develop relationships with other people, with a vocation, and with the physical and spiritual realms of life. This image derives its deep resonance from a connection back through personal experience to the collective layer of the psyche and the history of human experience.
This book explores the various stages of maturation and the challenges faced by each person who seeks authentic independence. Adulthood is hard-won, the work of heroes. Dr. Harding describes in depth the task of each level of development as we...

Two Book Series

Two book series came to my attention today. The titles won't all be on our shelves, but both series have Canadian distribution so are easy for us to obtain if you'd like to have a look at them..

The first, published by Wesleyan University Press, distributed by the University Press of New England , (in turn by UBC Press in Canada) is titled DISSEMINATIONS: Psychoanalysis in Contexts. There are seven titles so far, two by Michael Eigen ( Ecstasy ; Rage ), and the others: Dreams & Drama: Psychoanalytic Criticism, Creativity, and the Artist by Alan Roland; LEVINAS, THE FRANKFURT SCHOOL AND PSYCHOANALYSIS by Fred Alford; Psychoanalysis, Science and Politics by Michael Rustin; The Vitality Of Objects: Exploring the Work of Christopher Bollas edited by Joseph Scalia with a preface by Malcolm Bowie; Where Id Was: Challenging Normalization in Psychoanalysis , edited by Anthony Molino and Christine Ware.

The other series, published mostly by Nicolas-Hays, now a Red Wheel/Weiser imprint (from Canbook in Canada), is titled JUNG ON THE HUDSON Books. I was looking up M. Esther Harding ( Inner City Books are publishing a new edition of her book The Parental Image: Its Injury and Reconstruction in June) and found that she had written an introduction to Singer's Blake title. I was a bit surprised to find the series has eighteen titles so far! Two by Jeffrey Raff, Healing The Wounded God: Finding Your Personal Guide on Your Way to Individuation and Beyond 2002 $29.50; JUNG AND THE ALCHEMICAL IMAGINATION 2000, $29.50. David Rosen, TRANSFORMING DEPRESSION: Healing the Soul Through Creativity 2002 29.95 - this was once in Penguin. Sylvia Brinton Perera, CELTIC QUEEN MAEVE AND ADDICTION: An Archetypal Perspective 2001 $48.00; Ann Bedford Ulanov, ATTACKED BY POISON IVY: A Psychological Understanding 2001 $29.50; Veronica Goodchild, EROS AND CHAOS: The Sacred Mysteries and Dark Shadows of Love 2001 $35.95; Robin Robertson, THE INSIDE OUT: Mining the Soul 2000 $29.50; Sandra Lee Dennis, EMBRACE OF THE DAIMON: The Ecstatic Promise of the Dark 2001 33.95 - originally from Spring; Rachel Hillel, THE REDEMPTION OF THE FEMININE EROTIC SOUL 1997 $26.50;

The JUNG ON THE HUDSON series includes four by June Singer, BLAKE, JUNG AND THE COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS: The Conflict Between Reason and Imagination 2000 $29.50; ANDROGYNY: The Opposites Within 2000 $29.50 - the Anchor pocket edition from 1977 has an Annie-Lennox- like person wearing a suit and a wide- brimmed hat, one hand on hip; THE POWER OF LOVE: To Transform Our Lives and Our World 2000 $29.50; MODERN WOMAN IN SEARCH OF A SOUL: A Jungian Guide to the Visible and Invisible Worlds 1998 $29.50

More: Janet Dallett, The Not-Yet Transformed God: Depth Psychology and the Individual Religious Experience 1998 $26.50 - this used to be a Sigo Press title I think; Jean Shinoda Bolen, RING OF POWER: Symbols and Themes, Love Vs. Power in Wagner's Ring Cycle and in Us: A Jungian-Feminist Perspective 1999 $29.50 - this used to be from HarperCollins (my copy is); Maggy Anthony, JUNG'S CIRCLE OF WOMEN: The Valkyries (Rev) 1999 $29.50; Janice Brewi, MID-LIFE SPRITUALITY AND JUNGIAN ARCHETYPES (Rev) 1999 $29.50; Donald Dyer, JUNG'S THOUGHTS ON GOD: The Religious Depths of Our Psyches 2000 $29.50
