The Gift of Therapy by Irvine Yalom
2018-02-05

What can you say about Irvin Yalom that hasn’t already been said? I am not going to let this thwart my efforts to reiterate the standard praise which he has garnered for the last 35 years. Perhaps it is because I just graduated from a psychotherapy training institute that I have selected The Gift of Therapy: An Open Letter to a New Generation of Therapists and Their Patients to review, but it is just as relevant to someone who is about to begin therapy. In fact, this book shares something with very few books at Caversham in that it resides in the clinical psychotherapy section but could easily sit in the self-help section. What makes this volume so special is Yalom’s generosity in showing us his flaws or miss steps so we may benefit. Yalom’s ability to tell a good story and articulate it to the page is flawless, though, making this a very gratifying read.
