A challenge for any therapist who wishes to help clients who have been diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is to translate theory and empirical findings into meaningful and effective clinical practice. Using specific treatment components, such as exposure and response prevention, while continuing to build and nurture the therapeutic relationship, is a particular challenge. For more than ten years, Clare Rees has worked as a therapist who treats OCD, and in this book she provides an outline of her preferred approach to treating OCD. To be effective in their work with OCD clients, Dr Rees argues that clinicians require a thorough knowledge of an explanatory model that will help guide selection of treatment approaches. Dr Rees has found the cognitive model to be the most relevant and accurate account of OCD; her overview of this model provides a frame for her book. Described in detail are the characteristics of clients who have been treated and how they were treated. Clear summaries of current research findings that relate to both conceptualisation and treatment are provided. Individual chapters describe cognitive constructs that are relevant to OCD - such as magical thinking, intolerance of uncertainty and responsibility – and how these constructs can be addressed in therapy. Examples of case formulations and related treatment plans are provided; these will assist in tailoring evidence-based treatment to the needs of particular clients. Innovative treatment developments, including group treatments and metacognitive approaches, are outlined. How OCD in childhood and adolescence can be treated is discussed. Two complete therapist-manuals, a cognitive-behavioural treatment manual and a metacognitive treatment manual, are included; each has been trialled and published previously in the OCD research literature; each can be used for both individual and group therapy and is accompanied by tips to maximise effectiveness and extensive client resources. This book will provide mental health professionals of all levels of experience and graduate-level tertiary students of mental health with an evidence-based, practical guide to the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. --- from the publisher Contents: Acknowledgments Introduction Chapter 1 Living with uncertainty: an Introduction to OCD Chapter 2 Theoretical framework for understanding OCD Chapter 3 Responsibility: the curse of caring too much Chapter 4 Magical thinking: the invisible connection Chapter 5 Perfectionism, intolerance of uncertainty and doubt Chapter 6 Assessing OCD Chapter 7 Formulation and treatment planning Chapter 8 Evidence-based treatment of OCD Chapter 9 Group therapy for OCD Chapter 10 Metacognitive treatment for OCD Chapter 11 Treating children and adolescents Chapter 12 Metacognitive therapy treatment manual: group and individual protocol Chapter 13 Cognitive-behavioural treatment manual for OCD: group and individual protocol Appendices Client work sheets and handouts Appendix A Metacognitive treatment: Client work sheets and information sheets Appendix B Cognitive-behavioural treatment: Client work sheets and information sheets References Index About the Author: Clare S Rees, PhD is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology, Curtin University.
