Generalized anxiety and worry are experienced by almost everyone at some point in time or another, and are the core feature of generalized anxiety disorder. Associated features include sleep disturbance, impaired concentration, fatigue, and irritability, to name a few.

In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Generalized Anxiety and Worry, Dr. Martin M. Antony demonstrates and discusses his approach, which integrates exposure-based, cognitive-based, and relaxation-based strategies to help clients who are struggling with generalized anxiety and stress.

In this demonstration video, Dr. Antony works with a middle-aged woman who is experiencing generalized anxiety and struggling to cope with daily challenges.

Approach:

Dr. Martin Antony's primary approach to treatment is cognitive-behavioral therapy, generally in the area of anxiety and related disorders (e.g., social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, health anxiety, and perfectionism).

Dr. Antony uses exposure based strategies for dealing with fears of situations, objects, physical sensations, and thoughts. In addition, he uses cognitive strategies to help clients to challenge anxiety-provoking thoughts and to think about feared situations in a more balanced and flexible manner. Relaxation-based strategies (e.g., progressive muscle relaxation, breathing retraining) are used to help clients to cope with generalized anxiety and stress.

About the Therapist:

Dr. Martin Antony is a professor in the department of psychology at Ryerson University, where he was also previously department chair (2011–2016), founding graduate program director for the MA and PhD programs in psychology (2007–2011), and director of clinical training (2007–2009). He also holds faculty appointments at McMaster University and the University of Toronto.

In 1998, he founded the Anxiety Treatment and Research Clinic (Canada's largest anxiety disorders specialty clinic) at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, where he remains the director of research. In 2009–2010, he was president of the Canadian Psychological Association.

Dr. Antony has published 30 books, mostly on topics related to the assessment and treatment of anxiety-related disorders (e.g., social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, health anxiety, phobias) and perfectionism. These include evidence-based self-help books, several of which have received international awards, therapist manuals, books for researchers, and undergraduate textbooks. His books have been translated into 13 languages and have sold more than 225,000 copies.
