Insomnia usually appears in the presence of at least one other disorder. This program in this workbook is based on a proven-effective cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) treatment program created by coauthor Colleen Carney. Readers will learn new skills for dealing with insomnia and complete simple worksheets and assignments that will help them evaluate their insomnia as well as their comorbid condition. Chapters address insomnia and depression, insomnia and anxiety (including generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other specific types of anxiety), and insomnia and chronic pain.

About the Authors:

Colleen E. Carney, Ph.D., is an assistant professor and director of the sleep and mood disorder program at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, and is an adjunct professor at Duke University. She is president of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies interest group on insomnia and other sleep disorders. Carney was the recipient of the National Sleep Foundation's prestigious Pickwick Fellowship, and her research program is funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Rachel Manber, Ph.D., is associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA, where she is also director of the insomnia and behavioral sleep medicine program. She has been an instructor in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for insomnia and is one of the leading authorities on comorbid insomnias. Manber has an active federally funded research center focused on improving the treatment of insomnia and depression. Much of her research concentrates on CBT treatment of insomnia in people with depression. An experienced clinician, Manber is a proponent of empirically supported therapies for those with sleep problems.
