"This book is produced as a collection of patient or client 'handouts' covering many aspects of counselling and psychotherapeutic work with people suffering from these common conditions of stress, anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. It can be used as a self-help resource before a counselling or psychotherapy referral and it adopts a 'stepped-care' approach to these conditions so can be used as a resource during the course of therapy. It can thus be of great use both to the patient or client, as well as to the therapist, counsellor or GP. For many, these handouts could be as effective as the therapeutic and clinical work that they draw on. Trying to imagine myself once again in my first therapist's room, I wish there had been something like this on offer. Courtenay Young presents a contemporary view of therapy and counselling as accessible and relevant and not distant or precious. The book will interest seasoned professionals and students alike. It will also be a significant addition to the self-help mental health literature." -- --Andrew Samuels, Professor of Analytical Psychology, University of Essex Contents: 1) A Definition of Mental Health; 2) Stress; 3) About Depression; 4) Emotional Expression in Depression; 5) Anxiety; 6) Anger Management; 7) Self-Esteem; 8) What Works; 9) Bereavement and Grieving; 10) The Path to Mental Health; 11) The Road to Change; 12) Money Worries; 13)Self-Esteem Groups; 14) Clinician’s Supplement.
