About the Author:
Toby Karten, a consummate educator who has instructed learners in the field of special education since 1976, is a strong advocate for highlighting students' strengths within research-based inclusion strategies. Her diversified experience includes being a staff developer, mentor, resource and inclusion teacher, an adjunct professor, author, math coach, and international consultant for populations of learners ranging from kindergarten to adult levels. She has been recognized by both the Council for Exceptional Children and the New Jersey Department of Education as an exemplary educator.
Karten's continuing passion is for educators to prepare students to enter inclusive societies as productive adults. To this end, she founded and is director of Tamka Educational Products, LLC, through which she offers popular inclusion workshops that inform and inspire scores of participants.
Karten holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in special education, as well as a supervisory degree. She is an adjunct professor at Monmouth University, The College of New Jersey, Drew University, Gratz College, and Washington College. She designed a graduate course entitled Skills and Strategies for Inclusion and disABILITY Awareness and has trained scores of instructors in three states with the syllabus.
Karten's is the author of over a dozen books, including the National Professional Resources, Inc./Dude Publishing best seller, Inclusion Lesson Plan Book (standard and teacher training editions). For NPR Inc./Dude Publishing, she has also written the laminated guides
