Forensic social work is a growing field that applies social work expertise to matters of civil and criminal law. The issues dealt with by forensic social workers include separation and divorce, child custody, child and spousal abuse, juvenile delinquency, and substance abuse, among others. Forensic social workers offer expert testimony, consultations, diagnosis, and treatment to judges, lawyers, law enforcement personnel, and other members of the criminal justice system. Though most schools of social work offer courses and degrees in either forensic social work or social work and the law, there is no true handbook that synthesizes the diverse body of research for the practicing professional.
