This new Parent Guidebook is a resource for parents or caregivers of youth participating in the “Keeping Your Cool” Program for anger. The “Keeping Your Cool” Program employs a cognitive-behavioral approach to helping children and adolescents identify anger-arousing situations and how to better manage their anger. The Parent Guidebook informs parents about the experiences their child will have as he/she completes the program. Written specifically for parents, the Parent Guidebook provides information about the nature of anger, about its treatment, and about the ways parents may be involved in and support their child or adolescent’s treatment. Specifically, this resource includes information for parent’s modeling anger-management strategies for their child/adolescent by identifying their own somatic responses to anger, changing their own anger arousing thoughts, using relaxation, engaging in problem solving and humor to deal with effectively managing their anger rather than exploding or reacting in other self-defeating ways. It also provides information to parents and caregivers about differing parenting styles and how they can best respond to and support their child/adolescent’s efforts to better deal with anger-arousing situations. Furthermore, the Guidebook offers practical suggestions about not only structuring time for homework, becoming involved in their child’s schooling, and monitoring their child’s peer relationships, but also paying attention to their TV/ internet usage. Finally, it offers suggestions to parents about restoring their affectionate feelings for their child that often has waned over time, particularly as they have struggled in managing their child’s acting out.
