Starting with the physical being, we target keeping the child’s body and senses calm and grounded using movement, yoga and sensory strategies. At the mental level, we focus on methods such as attention training and meditation to keep attention strong. Next, we look at ways to keep the emotions balanced and positive with interventions based on Polyvagal Therapy, EFT, art and music. Finally, we tackle ways to help the child negotiate the world of people without being overwhelmed with social stories and transition techniques. Along the way, we discuss ways to exercise the child’s modulation skills. OBJECTIVES Describe general strategies for improving self-regulation at the physical, mental, emotional and social levels. Learn two activities to help calm and alert students in a classroom. Identify three activities that a therapist in a small office can use to calm a child. List ten ways to help a child transition from one activity to another. ABOUT TERESA GARLAND Teresa Garland, MOT, OTR/L, is an OT specializing in sensory and modulation issues.
